I don't necessarily know where I want to go with this. I guess I kind of want to talk about video games. Wowee, I've been playing video games since I was like 2. Nintendo was always present in my household. Video games are everywhere. But do they deserve to be ART?
Art in itself is based on a few objective traits. We have the elements and principles. Talking about video games being art feels ludicrious. When we view art, or let me say what is traditionally known as art, we think musuems. We think of things that are scholarly. Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh. We think of great literature like Shakespeare, Hawthorne, and Austen. All these people that defied their field of interest. From the form itself, to the authenticity, to even their presence in culture.
But like I said. This is our definition of traditional art. Art doesn't have to be scholarly and this is easily seen through commercialization. Is all entertainment necessarily art? Not so. And this is where defining art gets tricky. You don't want to include all of art because their is a difference between an entertainer and an artist. The difference is in performance, work, and even style. An entertainer wants to sound good. They care about their fidelity. They want an audience and works towards one. An entertainer is or can be an observer. A niche finder. Or even a stealer. An entertainer wants to be known in the world of popular culture. I could possibly even say popular culture equals commercialized art. I wouldn't say that it isn't art because it certainly can be but it can be set on the same pedestal traditional art either.
Video games are on the same plane. There are plenty of games that go for audience. They want to be played and will spend money to make the most polished game. This is fine. People love these consumerized products. But what video games have been art? Isn't a producer always supposed to have an audience or consumer in mind?
Any game can be art with the right critique. They can offer symbolism to the world we know it or give us a new perspective, a new way to live, and even information. But the downside of this is you can't be correct. If you can also find an opposing critique for that said piece of art being commercialized art then it is that too.
The artist doesn't need to have a producer in mind. If they are sticking to a medium, they know that is their path. Each medium thus opens up a lineage of tradition, form, and style. Selecting the medium opens up to audience but choosing design elements, gameplay, and setting for appeal is a sign of commercialization. It skews the video game or art into a box that has already been explored. Art is supposed to be about innovation and pushing forward. Art can change culture (traditional art) and culture can change art (commercial art.)
